Your narrative probably won’t come together in one sitting. So as a first step, get out a piece of paper and do some brainstorming on the following questions. A good narrative, like any great story, has a beginning, middle, and end. To get ideas, think about where you started and where you want to end up.
“Thank U, Next”: The sustain of that dreamy electric piano in this chord loop solidifies the G♭ chord as a G♭M13 and the F chord is an F7(#9) secondary dominant (V/vi )! Then we have a regular B♭m before returning to the tonic — but not so fast! We haven’t really returned home, since it’s a D♭7, another secondary dominant (V/IV) that sends us back to G♭M13. These secondary dominants act like coal nuggets to fuel a perpetual motion chord-loop machine. Form-wise, you could also call the chorus extensions “post-choruses,” but I already used up my “P” for the pre-chorus sections, so I’ll just call these extensions “variations” and be done with it.
“The most useful thing that I learned was to gain the conscious awareness of human emotions, in an intentional way, when developing chord progressions. creating music. And using writing techniques like modal interchange and others to help convey those emotional states of being in your music.”
Nea art works
Right off the bat, I think I’ve found one of my new favorite composers ever. His music is simply stunning. Ildebrando Pizzetti was born in Parma in 1880 to the pianist, Odoardo Pizzetti. His father taught him to play piano at a young age; but Ildebrando’s first love was writing plays — he had two produced for the stage before he turned 15. His focus turned back to music and he decided to enter the Musical Conservatorium of Parma in 1895 to study music full-time with Giovanni Tebaldini.
My sister is a TV comedy writer, and she once told me all she wants to do when she gets home is watch CSI or some other dark, dramatic show — because all she does all day is write jokes! I’ve noticed a similar pattern (have you?). When I’m done with a long string of shows, all I want to do is listen to nothing. But I found a loophole for this: Listen to the stuff you listened to as a teenager or when you first started getting into music. For me that’s ’90s R&B and neo-soul. Give me Ms. Lauryn Hill or Destiny’s Child and I’m instantly transported to a happy place, where I can dance around like a dummy and not care about anything.
The theremin and sci-fi are like two peas in a pod. Once the instrument became available to purchase, build, and learn on a somewhat wider scale, it was only a matter of time before it became the sound of the unknown in the world of sci-fi film scores. It sounds like a voice echoing out through space, like warbly electronic transmissions signaling an alien presence. Hermmann’s creative use of the instrument in this iconic score would go on to influence not only contemporary film composers like Danny Elfman, but also set the precedent for an entire genre of film which would blend score and sound design into one eery whole.
Imagine for a moment the Library of Congress. It’s the largest collection of books and documents in the world, all perfectly categorized. Imagine, one morning, a group of people go into the library and spend all day moving thousands of books and documents around, swapping or removing the labels. Chaos!
Since the housing bubble burst in 2008, banks are skittish about lending money to nontraditional earners like songwriters, here’s how you can beat them.
Grants for anything
Once hip-hop artists started making money, they were met by an influx of copyright suits. Such harsh court decisions and the constant threat of legal suits inhibited the creativity of hip-hop artists. This case reflects the legal reaction to hip-hop: in the eyes of the court, hip-hop and sampling were not art, but pure theft. Courts labeled samplers criminals, and the art form itself was forced to change.
The tone that differentiates the Dorian mode from the standard minor (Aeolian) scale is its major 6th. To create a venerable Dorian sound, we’ll need to exploit the presence of that major 6th, and its contrast with the minor 3rd.
That’s really what touring with your band is all about; the opportunity to get out there and do what you love in front of the people that love seeing it. It helps to know that when you arrive in a new city, there will already be a live music crowd ready to greet you with open arms. And some of the most vibrant, bustling music scenes — with great venues, great young bands, and audiences constantly looking for a good time out — exist in places with a few universities nearby.
The first chords of your song will set the emotional precedent that your lyrics should ultimately follow. Here’s a few suggestions for starting strong!
